Lucknow, October 3 : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has called upon the state government to initiate the caste survey immediately, asserting that despite opposition from some quarters, it is the only path to justice for the OBCs (Other Backward Classes).
In her post on X, Mayawati remarked, โThe news of the caste census data conducted by the Bihar government being made public is in the news today, and intense discussions are going on about it. Some parties are definitely uncomfortable with this, but for BSP, this is the first step in the long struggle for the constitutional rights of OBCs.โ
Mayawati expressed satisfaction that the political landscape of the country is shifting in favor of the marginalized โBahujan Samajโ (majority of the population), which has made even the most ardent โanti-casteโ and โanti-Mandalโ groups concerned about their future.
The BSP leader emphasized that while the Uttar Pradesh government should promptly commence a caste census or survey in line with the public sentiment, โthe ultimate solution will only be achieved when the central government conducts a nationwide caste census and ensures that the rightful rights are granted.โ
Earlier, the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had unveiled the findings of its long-anticipated caste survey ahead of the 2024 Parliamentary elections. The survey disclosed that OBCs (Other Backward Classes) and EBCs (Extremely Backward Classes) together constitute 63 percent of the stateโs total population. The data revealed that Biharโs overall population stood at slightly over 13.07 crore, with the Extremely Backward Classes comprising 36 percent, making them the largest social segment, followed by the Other Backward Classes at 27.13 percent.
