Strict action being taken against drug peddlers, addicts: DIG Central Kmr

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Central Kashmir, Rajeev Pandey (IPS) on Wednesday said that strict measures are being taken to curb drug trafficking and addiction across the region, with police identifying major hotspots and launching targeted operations to dismantle supply chains.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event marking the International Day for Persons with Disabilities organised by ‘She Hope Society’ in Shuhama Ganderbal, Pandey stressed the importance of inclusive support for specially-abled individuals and emphasised that they should not be segregated or treated differently.

“It would be better not to call them disabled. The theme of today’s program is inclusivity, supporting and enabling them to move forward alongside everyone else,” the DIG said, adding that integrating specially-abled persons into mainstream society ensures dignity and equal opportunity.

Turning to the growing drug menace, DIG Pandey said drug-related cases under PIT, NDPS and other provisions have increased significantly across Jammu and Kashmir, prompting intensified police action. “The aim of the DGP is that there should be no shortcomings in dealing with drug peddlers. Even if there is a lapse in investigation, action is taken against the concerned officers without hesitation,” he said.

Pandey further said that police have identified several hotspots where drug operations are suspected, and coordinated actions are underway to curb trafficking routes and suppliers. “At the range level, we operate drug de-addiction centres, and alongside enforcement, we are conducting awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and youth organisations,” he added.

Urging media and society to play a proactive role, the DIG said children are aware of the dangers of drugs, but they need a supportive environment to overcome addiction and stay protected from drug influence.

“Awareness is important, but we need a better environment, where children can come out of this,” he said.
