24 Vehicles Seized, ₹3.5 Lakh Recovered as Kulgam Administration Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining

In a robust and uncompromising drive against illegal mining, the Mining Department Kulgam has intensified enforcement operations across the district, resulting in the seizure of 24 vehicles involved in the unauthorized transportation of minerals and the recovery of more than ₹3.5 lakh in penalties during the last 48 hours.
The operation was conducted by the Mining Team Kulgam under the leadership of District Mineral Officer and Executive Magistrate Dr. Khurshid Ahmad, following the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam (IAS) and under the continued guidance of the Director, Geology and Mining, Jammu & Kashmir.
According to officials, the seized vehicles were found transporting illegally extracted and unaccounted mineral resources in violation of mining regulations. Strict action was taken against the offenders as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities and safeguard natural resources.
The enforcement drive also targeted vehicles operating in violation of mandatory technological compliance measures. Authorities initiated action against transporters who failed to adhere to the requirements of the Integrated Mine Surveillance System (IMSS), including the installation and operation of GPS and Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs). The technology-driven system has been introduced to ensure transparency, accountability, and real-time monitoring of mineral transportation across the Union Territory.
Officials stated that the latest operation reflects the administration’s policy of zero tolerance towards illegal mining and its commitment to establishing a strong deterrent against environmental violations and unauthorized mineral extraction.
“The Mining Team Kulgam has been carrying out sustained and vigilant enforcement activities, which have significantly curtailed unlawful extraction and transportation of minerals in the district,” an official said.
The administration reiterated its commitment to protecting the environment and preserving mineral resources for future generations. Residents, particularly those living in environmentally sensitive and vulnerable areas, have welcomed the intensified action and appreciated the efforts of the district administration in safeguarding ecological balance.
Meanwhile, the Mining Department has appealed to the public to actively support the campaign by promptly reporting any instances of illegal mining or unauthorized transportation of minerals. Officials emphasized that strict legal action will continue against violators, and enforcement drives will be further intensified in the coming days to ensure complete compliance with mining laws and regulations.
The administration maintained that protecting natural resources and preserving environmental integrity remain top priorities, and no leniency will be shown to those found involved in illegal mining activities.(CNS)
