SMC Commissioner appeals people to avoid throwing waste in drains
Srinagar, Aug 07 : The recent downpour in Srinagar has led to significant drainage problems, resulting in major disruptions for commuters throughout the city.
To address these challenges, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has made an appeal to the residents here to avoid discarding waste and plastic materials into drains, as these actions exacerbate the drainage issues.
SMC Commissioner Owais Ahmad, speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said while numerous smart city projects are already complete with the installation of underground drainage systems, the older systems in some areas remain problematic.
He added that dewatering units have been deployed to manage water accumulation in critical zones, and new dewatering stations are being established wherever necessary. “We deploy mobile dewatering units in areas experiencing severe water logging,” he said.
“As the funds we are receiving increase, we can address issues related to the drainage network, water logging and other concerns more effectively,” he added.
Notably, the Commissioner urged residents to prevent blockages in drains to avoid severe water logging on roads and lanes.
