Kashmir’s Ailing Health Sector: Patients Suffer Amid Medical Negligence, Lack of Expertise

Srinagar, Feb 8, – The healthcare system in Kashmir Valley continues to struggle, with patients and their attendants expressing frustration over inadequate treatment, alleged medical negligence, and unprofessional conduct by some medicos.
Concerns have been raised over the lack of expertise among certain doctors, with recent incidents highlighting serious flaws in the system.
One such case came to light recently when a hospital in the Valley was sealed after a doctor allegedly committed a major surgical blunder. The incident has reignited debates over the need for accountability and reforms in the region’s healthcare sector.
Patients complain that despite seeking treatment at government hospitals, they are often referred elsewhere due to a lack of specialized care. “We come here hoping for quality treatment, but instead, we are either referred to other hospitals or made to wait endlessly,” said Bilal Ahmad, an attendant at a Srinagar hospital.
In addition to medical shortcomings, attendants have also alleged that the behavior of some healthcare professionals is far from satisfactory.
“Some doctors and staff members treat patients with indifference. There is a lack of empathy, which adds to the distress of families already dealing with critical health issues,” said Shazia Jan, whose father is undergoing treatment at a district hospital.
Experts stress the urgent need for reforms to make the healthcare system more professional and patient-friendly.
“Medical institutions must ensure that only qualified professionals handle critical procedures. Regular training and skill enhancement programs are crucial to prevent surgical errors and other lapses,” said Dr. Faisal, a healthcare expert
The public is now calling for strict monitoring and accountability to restore confidence in the Valley’s healthcare system. “We need a system where medical negligence is not brushed under the carpet. The government must act decisively to ensure patients get the treatment they deserve,” said social activist Mehmooda Begum.
With growing dissatisfaction among people, authorities are under increasing pressure to mend the gaps in the healthcare sector and take corrective measures to ensure accessible, reliable, and quality medical care for all.
