Snowfall, Rain Lash Kargil as Fresh Weather System Hits Ladakh Region

Kargil, March 10, Fresh snowfall in higher reaches and rainfall in lower areas of Kargil district since last night has led to a sharp drop in temperature across the region, officials said on Tuesday.
Officials said several mountainous areas of the district received snowfall while rain lashed the plains, bringing cold weather conditions to the region.
The fresh spell of precipitation began late Monday night and continued intermittently on Tuesday morning, affecting routine activities in parts of the district.
Locals said the sudden change in weather disrupted normal movement in some areas, particularly in upper reaches where snowfall was reported.
However, the precipitation is expected to benefit water sources and agriculture in the region as snowfall contributes to replenishing glaciers and streams that feed irrigation channels during the summer months.
Farmers in the region said the moisture from rainfall and snowfall is considered beneficial for upcoming agricultural activities and will help improve water availability for crops.
Officials said they were monitoring the weather conditions while advising people travelling to higher reaches to exercise caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility in snowfall-prone areas.
Kargil district, located in the Ladakh region, frequently experiences snowfall in upper reaches during late winter and early spring due to western disturbances affecting the Himalayan belt.Β
