Non-Local ‘Drug Addict, Arrested for Theft, Dies in Custody

Jammu, Feb 13, : A Madhya Pradesh native, identified as Suresh Anuragi, who was arrested in a burglary case last week, died at a hospital in Jammu after complaining of severe chest and abdominal pain, police said.
Anuragi, a known drug addict who had undergone de-addiction treatment in the past, was residing in Jammu’s Trikuta Nagar and was arrested on February 4 along with two associates in connection with a theft case at Bahu Fort police station. Stolen household items, including an LED, cylinder, and fridge, were recovered based on his disclosure.
Police said that he complained of severe pain and was first taken to the District Police Hospital before being shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, where he passed away around 9:30 pm. His family was present during treatment, and authorities have requested a magistrate inquiry while notifying the NHRC.
The police emphasized that Anuragi underwent regular medical checkups throughout his remand and reaffirmed their commitment to a fair investigation while upholding the rule of law.
