Justice Tashi Rabstan appointed as acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court
New Delhi, July 16: The President of India has appointed Justice Tashi Rabstan, senior-most Judge of High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as Acting Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
This appointment was made consequent to the elevation of Justice N Kotiswar Singh as Judge of Supreme Court of India.
A notification to this effect reads, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Tashi Rabstan, Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent upon elevation of Shri Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court of India”.
Justice Tashi Rabstan enrolled as an Advocate on 6th March 1990 in Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir and started practicing in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir & various other High Courts on Arbitrations, Constitution, Service, Election, Civil and Criminal matters.
Justice Tashi remained as Standing Counsel for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh from 1997 till 2005; was appointed as Central Government Counsel, for Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Jammu Wing in September,1998 and continued till elevation. Justice Tashi also remained as panel counsel for Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi from April, 2008 till 31st December 2011.
Justice Tashi was appointed as permanent Judge of High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on 16.05.2014. He has previously also served as an Acting Chief Justice for a brief stint after the retirement of Chief Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey.
Last week Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Tashi to be the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court following the current Chief Justice S Vaidyanathan’s retirement on August 24.–(Live Law)
