Model Code of Conduct Enforced for Jammu and Kashmir

 

Srinagar, Aug 16: Following the Chief Election Commission’s announcement of a three-phase assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir starting September 18, with counting on October 4, the Model Code of Conduct has immediately come into effect in the Union Territory on Friday.

The Election Commission stated, “All provisions of the Model Code will apply to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, covering all candidates, political parties, and the governments of these states/UTs.”

It also stated that the Model Code of Conduct will apply to the Union Government with respect to any announcements or policy decisions related to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, the Chief Election Commissioner of India announced that the Jammu and Kashmir elections will take place on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes for both states scheduled for October 4, 2024.

Following the abrogation of Article 370, elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being held for the first time since 2014. The Supreme Court had mandated that these assembly elections must occur before September 2024.
