Gurez Valley Receives Moderate Snowfall, Residents Express Mixed Reactions

Srinagar, Feb 17, : The Gurez Valley in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district received moderate overnight snowfall, bringing much-needed relief to residents amid an otherwise dry winter.
According to locals, Dawar, the centrally located area of Gurez, recorded nearly nine inches of snow, while the remote Tulail tehsil received around five to six inches. Razdan Pass, the crucial route connecting Gurez to the rest of the Valley, was buried under snow, leading to its closure.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed that the region received snowfall ranging between five to eight inches.
However, residents have expressed mixed reactions to the season’s second moderate snowfall. “While this snowfall brings some relief, the winter has largely remained dry,” said Owais Khan Gujjar from Gujjran village, noting that his area recorded just five inches of snow—much lower than usual.
Another resident, Mustafa Zameer, observed that while some areas witnessed nearly a foot of snow, it was still far less than the typical snowfall Gurez receives during winter.
The dry spell this season has raised concerns among locals, particularly those dependent on snowfall for water supply and agriculture.
