Decline in Groundwater Levels Due to Reduced Rainfall and Snowfall in Kashmir
Srinagar, Jan 23, : In recent years, Kashmir Valley has witnessed a concerning decline in groundwater levels due to reduced rainfall and snowfall. Experts say this situation is most evident during the harsh winter period, known as “Chillai Kalan,” when temperatures drop below freezing, disrupting the natural recharge of water resources.
Officials from the Groundwater Department have confirmed that groundwater levels have dropped by 15 to 20 feet in recent years. According to them, this is a serious issue, and if weather conditions do not improve, groundwater levels could decline further by March.
Reports indicate that Tral Tehsil is among the areas in the valley most affected by the decline in groundwater levels. The region is significant for agriculture and horticulture, with residents heavily relying on wells and tube wells for water. However, the lack of adequate rainfall and snowfall has severely impacted these resources.
Experts warn that if this trend continues, the region could face a drinking water crisis in the coming months. The Groundwater Officer stressed the need for immediate measures to conserve water resources, stating, “It is crucial to curb the overuse of groundwater and implement projects for rainwater harvesting.”
Residents of Tral have also expressed concern over the situation. They report that water shortages are affecting both agriculture and daily life. In several villages, wells and tube wells have nearly dried up, forcing people to travel long distances to fetch water.
Experts and locals alike are urging the government to take immediate action to address the water scarcity problem. Proposed solutions include building water reservoirs, implementing modern irrigation systems, and launching awareness campaigns.
The decline in groundwater levels in Kashmir Valley is becoming a critical issue, directly affecting agriculture and daily life. The problem is particularly severe in Tral Tehsil. If timely action is not taken, this issue could lead to greater challenges for the residents of the valley in the near future.
