Traditional Kandur Roti Becomes Costlier, Locals Call for Govt Intervention

Srinagar, Dec 23: The iconic Kashmiri bakers, locally known as Kandur, have introduced a new rate list for the year 2024-25, doubling the prices of their staple roti products.

According to the updated list, the price of a single roti now starts at Rs. 10, replacing the previously available Rs. 5 option.

Residents express frustration as the daily cost of roti, a crucial component of their diet has effectively doubled. A family that earlier spent Rs. 20-30 on roti in the morning now needs to allocate Rs. 40-60 for the same quantity.

The updated prices, listed under the All Kashmir Bread Makers and Bakers Union, cite economic pressures such as rising costs of ingredients and operations.

However, residents argue that such a steep increase directly impacts the affordability of basic food items, urging authorities to intervene.

Locals demand urgent action to address this issue, ensuring that essential commodities remain within reach for the average citizen.
