*JKBOSE Plans Two-Tier Mathematics Exam for Class 10; Public Suggestions Invited Within 10 Days*

Srinagar, Nov 29 : In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has proposed a major reform by introducing two levels of Mathematics Basic and Standard for Class 10 students.
The initiative is aimed at reducing exam pressure and ensuring that assessments match the future academic interests of students.
According to an official notification issued by the BOSE as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, the Board seeks to remodel the existing evaluation system by allowing students to select the level of Mathematics that best suits their higher education plans, especially for those intending to pursue the subject at the Higher Secondary level.
As per the proposal, the Class 10 Board Exam will continue as a single examination, but students will be able to choose between Mathematics-Standard and Mathematics-Basic, depending on their choice and aptitude.
The Board explained that the Standard level paper will retain the current difficulty level, while the Basic level paper will be comparatively simpler. The move is designed to ensure that students who do not plan to continue with Mathematics after Class 10 are not burdened with advanced-level testing.
JKBOSE clarified that students aiming to take Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12 must opt for the Standard level, while those not interested in pursuing Mathematics further may choose the Basic level.
Despite varied difficulty levels, JKBOSE confirmed that the syllabus, teaching practices, and internal assessments will remain uniform for both levels. This would allow students to study the full range of topics and later choose the most suitable level for the final exam.
Students who select Mathematics-Standard but do not clear the exam will be eligible to appear in the Bi-Annual Examination, where they can attempt either the Standard or Basic level, as per their preference.
Similarly, a student who opts for Mathematics-Basic, clears the exam, and later decides to pursue Mathematics at Higher Secondary level will be permitted to sit for the Mathematics-Standard Compartment Examination, ensuring academic flexibility.
To ensure a transparent and inclusive decision-making process, JKBOSE has sought feedback and suggestions from all sections of society, including teachers, parents, students, academicians, civil society groups, and scholars. Responses must be submitted within 10 days of the issuance of the notice.
