Smart Meter Installation Underway in Poonch to Curb Power Losses

Poonch, Apr 5, : A drive to install smart electricity meters is currently underway in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at improving power distribution and reducing system losses. Electrical Engineer Vinod Dabur said that the initiative, ongoing for the past 2.5 months, has so far covered 900 out of 1,000 meters sent by the government.

The initial phase focuses on the town’s 7,000 domestic consumers, with installations also being carried out at commercial establishments. Dabur dismissed concerns of inflated bills, stating that charges depend strictly on consumption. “People can track their hourly and daily usage via a dedicated app,” he added.

Once meters are installed, cabling work will begin to minimize power theft and technical losses. Dabur termed it a flagship initiative of both the central and UT governments, assuring long-term benefits including reduced load on transformers and fewer conductor snaps.
