On this day, 12 years ago, Kashmir witnessed one of the most devastating floods in its recent history. Relentless rainfall caused the Jhelum and other water bodies to overflow, submerging large parts of the Valley and turning homes, roads, markets and entire neighbourhoods into scenes of destruction.
Thousands of families were displaced, countless homes and businesses were damaged, and many precious lives were lost. Srinagar and several other areas remained under water for days, leaving behind a trail of immense loss and heartbreak.
But amid the devastation, Kashmir also witnessed extraordinary courage and humanity. Ordinary people became rescuers, strangers opened their doors to those in need, boats moved through flooded streets, and communities stood together when everything around them seemed to be falling apart.
The floods of 7 September 2014 were not just a natural disaster—they became a painful chapter in Kashmir’s collective memory. Even after the waters receded, the scars remained in the hearts and lives of those who experienced that terrifying time.
12 years later, the memories remain. The pain remains. And so does the spirit of Kashmir.
