SRINAGAR Jan 08: Srinagar News (SN)Amirakadal Bridge, a historical marvel in the heart of Srinagar, has become a glaring example of urban decay and governance failure. Once a lifeline and symbol of Kashmir’s rich cultural and economic heritage, the bridge now struggles under the weight of encroachments, pollution, and neglect, casting a shadow on the city’s ambitious Smart City initiative.
Constructed in the late 18th century during the Afghan era, Amirakadal Bridge served as a vital link
between the old and new quarters of Srinagar. It was not just a bridge but a lifeline for trade and cultural exchanges, offering picturesque views of the Jhelum River and bustling markets. However, years of mismanagement have stripped it of its historic charm, leaving behind a chaotic structure marred by illegal encroachments and traffic congestion.
The once-pristine bridge now serves as an unauthorized marketplace, with vendors occupying large portions of its footpaths and narrowing the space for pedestrians and vehicles. Illegal parking and waste dumping have further deteriorated its condition, while a nexus between encroachers, local police, and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials has allowed these illegal activities to thrive unchecked.
This unholy alliance has not only undermined the rule of law but also disrupted daily life for commuters. Below the bridge, the polluted Jhelum River serves as a grim reminder of civic neglect, with waste from encroachments adding to the degradation of this vital waterway.
Despite the promises of the Smart City project, Amirakadal Bridge remains a blot on the urban landscape. The neglect of this iconic structure contradicts the project’s objectives of transforming Srinagar into a modern and sustainable city. Tourists are greeted by chaos instead of heritage, tarnishing the city’s image and raising questions about the efficacy of governance.
To restore the bridge’s historical and functional significance, a multi-pronged approach is essential: Remove Encroachments: Authorities must launch a focused anti-encroachment drive to reclaim the bridge. Address Corruption: An independent inquiry into the alleged collusion between officials and encroachers is critical, with strict action against those found guilty.
Redesign and Urban Planning: The bridge should be restructured to balance pedestrian and vehicular needs while preserving its historical essence. Beautification Efforts: Adding landscaping, lighting, and cultural markers can revive its aesthetic and cultural appeal.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating locals on the bridge’s heritage can foster a sense of pride and responsibility. Clean the Jhelum and Develop the Riverfront: Restoring the river and its surroundings can enhance the bridge’s ambiance and support tourism.
Amirakadal Bridge is more than just a structure; it is a testament to Srinagar’s heritage and resilience. Allowing it to languish in its current state not only tarnishes the city’s past but also jeopardizes its future. Immediate action is needed to reclaim this iconic landmark and ensure it reflects the aspirations of a modern, smart Srinagar. Bashir Ah Baig Srinagar News(SN)
