Will take over, provided Gotabaya quits: SJB

Colombo : MPs of Samagi Jana Balawegyaya, the opposition party in Sri Lanka, have decided to take over the government, provided President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigns from the post. SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna told the Daily Mirror that SJB has decided to take over the government, in the event the President leaves office. “Most of the MPs had proposed that the party should take over the government, only if the incumbent President leaves office,” he said. The party also met other opposition political parties including the independent group and former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe. Earlier, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa that they will accept any responsibility as long as it does not involve working with any ‘crisis instigators’. “We have always offered our absolute support to overcome this crisis. It’s good to finally have a productive meeting with CB Governor and Treasury Secretary. It is a given fact that we will take on any responsibility as long as it does not involve working with any crisis instigators,” he said. Mahinda Rajapaksa had also resigned from the post of Prime Minister of the country. On Monday, seven people were killed, following the unrest that erupted due to the clashes between the ruling party supporters and anti-government protestors in the capital.
