Aijaz Sheikh Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Decades-Long Child Abuse in Kashmir

Sopore, Feb 18, : Aijaz Sheikh, a notorious child rapist from Kashmir, has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 377 of the Ranbir Penal Code for the sexual abuse of children in north Kashmir over the past three decades.

The court, in its verdict, also directed Sheikh to pay Rs 45,000 in compensation to each of the two victims in the current case, along with a fine of Rs 5,000 for each victim. In addition, other survivors who have alleged abuse by Sheikh over the years now have the opportunity to file separate FIRs against him.

Aijaz Sheikh, who held multiple roles in the community, including Imam, school teacher, and faith healer, used these positions of trust to exploit vulnerable children. His manipulative tactics allowed him to continue his abuse unchecked for decades, leading to numerous survivors coming forward with chilling accounts of their experiences.

The case against Sheikh began with an FIR filed on March 2, 2016, and charges were brought against him in October 2017. However, the trial was marred by delays over the years. The defense team presented arguments for the first time on January 3, 2025, and the judgment was reserved until February 17.

During the conviction, the Chief Judicial Magistrate stated that the other survivors, who were registered only as witnesses, are free to file separate FIRs against Sheikh for his crimes. The court’s ruling has now ensured that Sheikh will face the full consequences of his actions.
