Crack Detected in Newly Constructed Steel Truss Arch of Wayil Ganderbal Bridge

Wayil Ganderbal, December 30– A crack has been discovered in the newly constructed steel truss arch of the Wayil Ganderbal Bridge, located on the River Sindh. The 110-meter-long bridge, which connects the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, was officially opened to the public on May 26, 2023.
The crack, which appeared on the lower side of the bridge, has raised concerns among locals and experts alike. While authorities have confirmed that no significant damage has occurred and the bridge remains structurally safe, the cause of the crack has been attributed to potential issues with the earth filling beneath the structure. It is believed that the filling may not have been given enough time to settle properly before the bridge was opened.
Despite reassurances from officials that this is not a technical failure, the incident has sparked renewed calls for a thorough review of the construction process. Local residents are urging the concerned authorities to investigate the matter and ensure that adequate measures are taken to prevent future issues with public infrastructure projects.
“This crack could have been avoided if proper settling time for earth filling was considered. We request the authorities to thoroughly inspect the bridge and other projects to ensure safety and prevent any future damage,” said a local resident.
As authorities continue to monitor the situation, the Wayil Ganderbal Bridge remains open to traffic, and engineers are expected to carry out further assessments to ensure the continued safety and stability of the structure.
The incident serves as a reminder to all stakeholders involved in public infrastructure projects about the importance of thorough planning, proper material settlement, and stringent checks to ensure the longevity and safety of critical public assets.
