*Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Cases Surge: SKIMS Issues Urgent Warning*

*Urges Residents To Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors, Avoid Indoor Use Of Generators, And Ensure Proper Ventilation To Prevent Poisoning*

Srinagar, Jan 04 : In response to a significant increase in carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning cases, the Critical Care Department at SKIMS has issued an urgent public safety advisory urging residents to take immediate precautions.

Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas produced by burning fuels like gas, wood, or charcoal, can be deadly when inhaled in large amounts. The advisory comes after a spike in emergency cases linked to the improper use of fuel-burning appliances, indoor use of generators, and poorly ventilated spaces.

Households, as per advisory, using gas heaters, stoves, or fireplaces, as well as individuals operating vehicles in closed garages, are most at risk. Poor ventilation in workplaces and the use of indoor grills also contribute to the rising cases. Key symptoms include: Headaches and dizziness. Nausea and vomiting. Fatigue and shortness of breath. Confusion and chest pain in severe cases. The department urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to evacuate immediately and seek fresh air, followed by medical attention.

To reduce the risk, the advisory recommends: Installing carbon monoxide detectors in key areas of the home. Avoiding the indoor use of generators, grills, or gas heaters. Ensuring proper ventilation and regular maintenance of fuel-burning appliances. Residents are also warned against leaving vehicles running in closed garages, as this can lead to rapid CO buildup.

In cases of suspected poisoning, the public is advised to: 1. Leave the area immediately and get fresh air. 2. Call emergency services for medical assistance. 3. Avoid re-entering the affected area until it is deemed safe by professionals.

The Critical Care Department at SKIMS stresses that CO poisoning is preventable with proper awareness and safety measures. Residents are urged to remain vigilant to protect themselves and their families.
