Fresh Snowfall in Kashmir’s Plains, Rains Lash Other Parts

Srinagar, Mar 15, : Several areas of Kashmir, including its plains, were blanketed in fresh snowfall on Saturday, while other parts of the Valley experienced light to moderate rainfall, officials said.

The snowfall was reported from the plains of South Kashmir’s Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama districts, bringing a picturesque transformation to the region. Popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam also received a fresh layer of snow, much to the delight of visitors.

Officials confirmed that snowfall was also recorded in Gurez, located in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, along with several localities in Kupwara and higher reaches of the Valley. The snow continued to fall in these areas till the last reports came in.

Meanwhile, most other areas in the Valley were drenched in light to moderate rainfall, leading to a drop in temperatures. The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent spells of light to moderate rainfall at most places throughout Saturday, with snowfall expected in the higher reaches.

“There is a possibility of brief spells of light rain or snow at several places towards Sunday morning,” the Met office said, adding that weather conditions are expected to improve by the afternoon.

The fresh snowfall and rain are likely to impact road connectivity, particularly in higher reaches, while also enhancing the Valley’s water reserves crucial for agriculture.

The authorities have urged commuters to remain cautious, especially in areas prone to slippery road conditions.
