Smart Meters Installed in Pattan Mosques for the First Time, Masjid Committee Raises Concerns

Baramulla, April 17, : In a controversial move, smart electricity meters have been installed for the first time in mosques in the Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, sparking concern among locals and mosque authorities.
According to reports, fresh smart meters were recently installed in several mosques in the town, marking a first in the region. The development has not gone down well with local residents and the Masjid Committee, who have raised objections over the move and called for an exemption.
The Masjid Committee in Pattan expressed strong resentment, arguing that installing commercial-style metering systems in places of worship may impose a heavy financial burden on the community. “This is the first time that such meters have been installed in masjids here. The decision has the potential to cause huge inconvenience to the locals who voluntarily support mosque functioning and utility bills,” a committee member said.
The demand for exemption is gaining ground, with many in the town urging the authorities to reconsider the step and explore alternatives that respect the sanctity of religious institutions while ensuring fair energy usage policies.
