Over 32,000 Cancer Cases Reported in J&K in 3 Years; Govt Data Revealed in Assembly

Srinagar: More than 32,000 cancer cases have been reported across Jammu and Kashmir during the past three years, with lung, oral, cervical, prostate and pancreatic cancers emerging as the most prevalent, according to official data shared by the Health Department.
The information was disclosed in response to a query raised by MLA Pulwama Waheed Ur Rehman Para in the Legislative Assembly. The government stated that a total of 32,425 cases were recorded during the period, highlighting a significant public health concern in the Union Territory.
As per the data, lung and oral cancers continue to account for a major proportion of cases, reflecting lifestyle and environmental risk factors, while cervical and prostate cancers remain among the leading gender-specific health challenges. Pancreatic cancer was also listed among the commonly reported types.
The figures underline the need for enhanced awareness, early screening, and improved access to diagnostic and treatment facilities across both urban and rural areas. Health experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of preventive measures, timely check-ups, and strengthening oncology services to address the rising burden.
MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para, who sought the information, emphasized the importance of transparency in public health data and the need for focused policy measures to tackle cancer incidence in the region.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure and screening programmes to ensure better detection and management of cancer cases in Jammu and Kashmir.
