Sopore: Aijaz Guru, brother of the Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, declared on Thursday that Kashmiris have suffered for the past 35 years and can no longer endure the oppression. However, Afzal Guru’s wife, Tabasum Guru, clarified that Aijaz’s choice to run in the assembly elections is his personal decision and does not represent the Guru family.
Speaking after submitting his nomination for the Sopore assembly seat, Aijaz stated that Kashmiris have been detached from the democratic process for 35 years, enduring relentless oppression, as reported by local news agencies. He emphasised that this suffering can no longer be tolerated.

Official records show that 23 candidates are contesting the Sopore seat, including key figures from the National Conference, Congress, PDP, and others.
Meanwhile, Tabasum Guru expressed her distress over the media displaying Afzal Guru’s image alongside Aijaz’s, asking them to stop. She shared that her late husband had advised her to sever ties with Aijaz in 2005 and reiterated that his political actions are entirely his own. She urged the media to respect her privacy, stating that she would not respond to further inquiries.
