The Election Commission of India has put the appointment of Colonel Vikrant Prasher from the Indian Army as SSP (Training) and Special Operations in Jammu and Kashmir Police on hold, citing the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the region.
In an official communication addressed to the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir Bulletin (KB), reads the commission referenced Government order, as the order had authorized Colonel Prasher’s appointment from the Para Unit of the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg to the J&K Police force.
It reads, however, the Election Commission noted that the MCC, which is currently in effect due to the General Election for the Legislative Assembly, prohibits the transfer and appointment of officers involved in election-related duties. The Commission stated that, despite any rationale or urgency behind the appointment, it must comply with the MCC regulations.
“The order to appoint Colonel Prasher has been placed in abeyance with immediate effect, and the situation prior to the issuance of the order must be restored. The Chief Secretary has been directed to submit a compliance report by 11:00 AM on October 1, 2024, along with an explanation as to why the order was issued without the Commission’s prior approval,” reads the commune.
