PDP Slams Delay in J&K Assembly Rules, Pushes for Alcohol Ban, Labour Rights

Srinagar, Feb 24, The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over the delay in the release of the rules of procedure for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, questioning why even elected MLAs have not been provided access.
Taking to X, the PDP Youth Wing stated, “Would’ve happily read the rules of procedure & conduct of business in J&K assembly but the speaker is yet to release it, even to the elected MLAs.”
At the same time, the party has announced plans to introduce three key bills in the Assembly, including legislation on regularisation of casual labourers, an alcohol ban, and land ownership rights for landless people.
The PDP has been particularly vocal about banning alcohol, with senior party leader Iltija Mufti stressing that drugs and alcohol are devastating families in J&K. “We must come together to put an end to it before it’s too late,” she said. PDP MLA Fayaz Ahmad Mir from Kupwara has formally proposed a bill seeking a complete ban on the advertisement, sale, purchase, consumption, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages in the region.
The PDP’s criticism of the delay in Assembly rules comes a day after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather expressed displeasure over MLAs publicizing their notices submitted to the Legislative Assembly.
A communique from the Assembly Secretariat stated that as per parliamentary norms, “it is improper to give unwarranted publicity to the notices of questions, bills, resolutions, and other similar matters connected with the Business of the House.”
